Uni Study Log: Measurements & Uncertainties

A place to note down where I got extra info on new topics or things that I needed to catch up on.

Also some notes on important ideas.

Poisson distribution

The Connection Between the Poisson and Binomial Distributions

Derivation of Poisson distribution from binomial distribution, when the number of trials $n$ is large and the probability of success $p$ is small.

Introduction to Error Analysis: The Study of Uncertainties in Physical Measurements

(Who would’ve thought that my uni professor recommended the same book that my high school teacher recommended to me…)

Important ideas:

  • $\mu=np$ is constant
  • Standard deviation $\sigma$ in a counted value $\nu$ is $\sqrt{\nu}$

Uniform Distribution

What is the standard deviation of a uniform distribution? How is this formula determined?

When $X$ follows a uniform distribution in the range $a \le X \le b$, $\sigma_X = \frac{b-a}{\sqrt{12}}$.

Important ideas:

  • Variance is mean of the squares minus square of the mean
  • Find mean of $X$ or $X^2$ using integration ($X$ is continuous) or summation $\Sigma$ ($X$ is discrete)

Equipment Specs

What does it mean when multimeter accuracy is marked as: ±0,03%+10Digit?

The uncertainty has two parts.

Lab Book

A Lab Book Demo

From prep to experiment and to reflection. By the University of Sheffield.

Lab Notebook Instructions

Seems to be from 2007, so it’s pretty old. The lab book example is helpful.
